Gentex Shares Slide 7% as Q3 Earnings, Revenue Miss Estimates; Company Narrows 2026 Guidance
Shares of Gentex fell to a 52-week low Friday after the auto-tech supplier reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that fell short of Wall Street forecasts, dragged down by persistent headwinds in China, delayed product launches and rising commodity costs. The company narrowed its full-year 2026 outlook but reiterated its 2027 targets.
Gentex Corp. (NASDAQ: GNTX) shares dropped roughly 7% in Friday trading after the automotive technology supplier posted third-quarter results that missed analyst expectations on both profit and revenue.
The stock touched a 52-week low of $19.95, compared with the prior close of $21.74, according to MarketBeat. Volume reached 19,649 shares.
The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.47 for the quarter ended Sept. 30, versus the consensus estimate of $0.50, a miss of $0.03, per its earnings release. On a GAAP basis, earnings per diluted share attributable to Gentex came in at $0.43. Net sales of $647.7 million were well below the $669.69 million analysts had anticipated and down 1.1% from $655.2 million in the same period last year.
"We delivered third quarter net sales that were relatively flat compared to the third quarter of 2025 even though revenue was approximately $35 million below our beginning-of-quarter forecast," said Steve Downing, president and CEO, in the company's earnings release. He attributed the shortfall to "certain customer issues and delayed launches in the quarter."
Gross margin for the quarter was 33.4%, down from 34.4% a year ago. Gentex cited higher precious metal costs and the impact of lower-than-anticipated sales, which reduced operating leverage and skewed product mix.
**Regional and Product Performance**
Despite the overall revenue decline, the company reported content-driven growth in several areas. North American automotive revenue rose roughly 3% year over year, outperforming a 5% drop in regional light vehicle production. In Europe, revenue grew 13% in the region excluding the previously disclosed Volkswagen program loss, which more than offset gains elsewhere.
China remained a "known headwind" during the quarter, the company said, as industry conditions continued to pressure unit shipments and revenue.
Outside its core automotive business, Gentex posted a 17% year-over-year increase in non-automotive revenue, which now accounts for 15% of total company revenue, up from 12% a year ago. Premium Audio revenue jumped 27% to $54.7 million, while other product categories — including aerospace, biometrics, fire protection and automotive aftermarket — collectively rose 5%.
Adjusted income from operations was $118.8 million, down from $102.8 million in the year-ago quarter on an adjusted basis. The company reported net income attributable to Gentex of $90.6 million on a GAAP basis and $97.8 million on an adjusted basis.
**Guidance and Outlook**
Following the quarterly results, Gentex narrowed its financial guidance for the full year 2026 but reaffirmed its 2027 outlook, as reported by Benzinga. The company did not provide specific revised figures in the release.
Operating expenses on a GAAP basis fell to $101.3 million from $102.8 million a year ago. On an adjusted basis, operating expenses declined to $97.5 million from $101.8 million, reflecting what the company described as a "continued focus on managing operating expenses as sales growth has moderated."
Gentex also disclosed it was awarded its first printed circuit board assembly contract, with production expected to begin in 2029. The company said progress continues on its dimmable visor product, which is scheduled to launch late next year.
**Analyst and Capital Activity**
Several brokerages lowered their price targets on Gentex following the results, according to MarketBeat. JPMorgan cut its target to $27 from $28 with a neutral rating. UBS reduced its target to $24 from $25, also neutral. Goldman Sachs lowered the stock to "sell" from "neutral" and cut its target to $20 from $23. The analyst consensus rating on Gentex remains "Hold" with an average price target of $25.20, per MarketBeat.
Gentex paid a quarterly dividend of $0.12 per share on Oct. 21 to holders of record Oct. 7. The annualized dividend of $0.48 represents a yield of 2.3%. The company also repurchased 5.7 million shares during the quarter for $132.6 million.
Institutional investors and hedge funds own 86.76% of the stock, according to MarketBeat. The company's market capitalization stood at $4.41 billion.
