Ciena's 15% Slide Masks Accelerating AI Demand, Supply Risks Remain

Ciena Corp. shares fell 15.2% in the past week even as fiscal third-quarter results beat expectations and AI-driven cloud-provider revenue surged 82%. The pullback opens a debate between a rapid growth trajectory and persistent supply-chain and valuation risks.

Ciena Corp. shares have tumbled 15.2% over the past week, a decline that comes despite stronger-than-expected fiscal third-quarter results and a rising tide of AI-related optical networking demand.

The disconnect, analysts say, puts execution risk at center stage. Supply constraints, customer concentration, and a valuation well above the company’s historical median leave less room for disappointment even as growth indicators strengthen.

The networking equipment maker reported adjusted earnings of $2.11 per share for the fiscal third quarter, up 215% year over year and above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.74. Revenue rose 37% to $1.67 billion, topping the $1.65 billion consensus. Adjusted operating margin reached 22.5%, nearly double the 10.7% posted a year earlier.

Ciena also raised its fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $6.42 billion, plus or minus $50 million, implying roughly 35% growth at the midpoint.

**AI cloud demand fuels growth**

Direct cloud-provider revenue jumped 82% year over year and accounted for 53% of quarterly sales. Backlog stood at $8.5 billion at quarter-end and is expected to exceed $10 billion by fiscal year-end. Customer commitments now extend through 2029.

Peers are reporting similar AI infrastructure activity. Cisco Systems Inc. took $9.3 billion of AI infrastructure orders from hyperscalers in fiscal 2026 and expects $7.5 billion of related revenue in fiscal 2027. Lumentum Holdings Inc. reported $1.01 billion in fiscal fourth-quarter revenue, with management citing rising AI bandwidth needs and advancing 1.6T cloud-module adoption.

**Supply constraints temper the outlook**

Despite strong demand, Ciena’s supply-demand balance remains tight. Management expects constraints to persist through 2027 and likely 2028. The company has secured certain key components through 2029, but those agreements require upstream investment that will reduce fiscal fourth-quarter operating cash flow.

Ciena had $3.3 billion of outstanding purchase orders as of Aug. 1, only a portion of which were firm and non-cancelable, according to the company’s filings. Nine-month inventory excess and obsolescence provisions reached $72.4 million.

Customer concentration adds another layer of risk. Two cloud providers generated 41.7% of fiscal third-quarter revenue, and management said roughly half of the business now comes directly from hyperscalers, making product mix and order timing more volatile.

**Valuation leaves little margin for error**

After the recent decline, Ciena still trades at 35.7 times forward 12-month earnings, near the Zacks sub-industry average of 36.3 times but well above the Zacks Computer and Technology sector’s 20.4 times. The multiple also sits far above Ciena’s five-year median of 25.5 times.

While the premium reflects an improved outlook, it raises the bar for sustained growth, margin delivery, and supply execution.

**Fiscal 2027 guidance points to further scaling**

Looking ahead, Ciena provided a fiscal 2027 revenue target of at least 30% growth, which would bring revenue to between $8.3 billion and $8.4 billion, according to a report from Zacks Investment Research. Management projects an adjusted gross margin of 45% to 46% and an adjusted operating margin of 25% to 27%, extending the operating leverage shown in the latest quarter.

Product-level momentum supports the bullish case. RLS and Waveserver revenues each rose more than 55% year over year, while pluggables revenue more than doubled. WaveLogic 6 Nano 800ZR shipments more than doubled sequentially, and Ciena secured a second multi-rail win for high-density photonic infrastructure.

The vast majority of the expected year-end backlog carries customer-request dates in fiscal 2027 and covers most of the company’s revenue guide for that year, management said.

**Ratings and risk**

Ciena currently carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), reflecting favorable earnings estimate-revision trends over the one- to three-month horizon. Its Momentum Score of A and Growth Score of B point to favorable characteristics, while a Value Score of F and VGM Score of C signal a more mixed composite profile.

Seeking Alpha upgraded the stock to Strong Buy, citing 47% to 55% upside potential as market mispricing creates compelling entry points, the outlet reported.

The bottom line is that the 15.2% weekly drop has not fundamentally altered the tension between strengthening earnings and AI demand on one hand and supply, concentration, and valuation risks on the other. Execution remains central to the investment case.
