Gentex Shares Tumble 7% After Q3 Earnings and Revenue Miss, 2026 Guidance Narrowed
Gentex shares fell to a 52-week low Friday after the auto-parts maker reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $0.47 per share and revenue of $647.7 million, both short of analyst estimates. The company narrowed its 2026 guidance while reaffirming its 2027 outlook.
Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX) shares fell 7% on Friday, hitting a new 52-week low of $19.95, after the company reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that missed analyst expectations and narrowed its full-year 2026 guidance. The stock last traded at $20.34, down from Thursday's close of $21.74, with volume of 19,649 shares.
The Zeeland, Michigan-based technology manufacturer reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.47 for the quarter ended September 30, missing the consensus estimate of $0.50 by $0.03, according to MarketBeat. On a GAAP basis, net income attributable to Gentex was $90.6 million, or $0.43 per diluted share, the company disclosed in its earnings release.
Revenue came in at $647.7 million, below analyst expectations of $669.69 million and down 1.1% from $655.2 million in the same quarter last year. The company said revenue was approximately $35 million below its beginning-of-quarter forecast due to certain customer issues and delayed launches.
Revenue Details and Regional Performance
Despite the overall shortfall, North American automotive revenue rose about 3% year over year even as regional light vehicle production declined 5%. In Europe, automotive revenue grew 13% year over year excluding the impact of the Volkswagen program loss. Globally, automotive revenue achieved 2% year-over-year growth apart from previously announced headwinds in China and with VW, the company said.
Non-automotive revenue increased approximately 17% year over year, representing 15% of total company revenue in the third quarter, compared to 12% in the year-ago period. Premium Audio revenue jumped 27% to $54.7 million, while Other Products revenue, including Aerospace, Biometrics, Fire Protection, and Automotive Aftermarket, collectively rose 5%.
Margin Pressure from Costs
Gross margin fell to 33.4% from 34.4% a year earlier, driven by higher precious metal costs and the impact of lower-than-anticipated sales, which resulted in unfavorable product mix and reduced operating leverage.
“The higher precious metal costs which increased bill of material costs has been an ongoing headwind over the last few quarters as these commodity prices have increased significantly,” said President and CEO Steve Downing in the company's earnings release. He noted that despite the sales shortfall, the company remains focused on engineering solutions to offset the inflationary cost environment.
Operating expenses on a non-GAAP basis fell to $97.5 million from $101.8 million in the year-ago quarter, reflecting cost management as sales growth slowed.
Guidance and Outlook
The company narrowed its 2026 guidance, according to Benzinga, but reaffirmed its 2027 outlook. Specific revised ranges were not provided in the available materials.
Downing said third-quarter results demonstrated business resilience and the benefits of the company's strategy to grow through technology, product mix, and diversification. “Despite continued challenges in China and Europe, we delivered third quarter net sales that were relatively flat compared to the third quarter of 2025,” he said.
