Microsoft Launches Nvidia-Powered AI PCs, Revamps Windows 11 for Local Agent Workflows
Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra and Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, both built on Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip, alongside a redesign of Windows 11 including Execution Containers, a three-tab Copilot interface, and a faster search bar.
Microsoft took the wraps off its first Nvidia RTX Spark-based PCs on Wednesday, kicking off a new generation of local AI-capable Windows machines. At an event in San Francisco during Tech Week, the company detailed two new Surface devices and outlined a host of changes to Windows 11 aimed squarely at developers and AI enthusiasts.
**Surface Laptop Ultra and Dev Box**
The Surface Laptop Ultra is Microsoft’s first PC to use Nvidia’s RTX Spark system-on-a-chip. It starts at $2,599, according to Ars Technica, with a higher-end model starting at $3,700, as reported by TechCrunch. Configurations with up to 128 GB of LPDDR5x unified memory and either a 5120-core or 6144-core Blackwell GPU push the price to $5,900. Microsoft said that top-tier configuration is already out of stock. The laptop ships October 16 and is available for preorder now.
The device is designed to run AI models locally, with unified memory allocation that allows the system to assign resources between AI workloads and traditional tasks. Microsoft demonstrated the laptop running *Gears of War: E-Day*, signaling AAA gaming alongside AI development.
For developer-focused work, Microsoft also revealed the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a $5,999 anodized aluminum black box. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella joined President of Windows and Devices Pavan Davuluri on stage for the unveiling. The Dev Box comes with a custom developer-optimized build of Windows 11, 128 GB of unified memory, and promises one petaflop of AI compute. The unit includes 1,000 chassis air vents as a nod to that performance. It ships with Microsoft dev tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7.
To lure developers away from Macs, Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 off for customers who trade in a MacBook Pro, TechCrunch reported. Dell also announced its own RTX Spark-based PC, the XPS 16 Creator Edition, available for preorder at Best Buy for $3,800, per TechCrunch.
**Windows 11 Overhaul for AI Agents**
The new PCs run a revamped version of Windows 11. Microsoft is introducing a feature called Execution Containers, which sandboxes AI agents so they cannot access the full operating system. The framework, available to developers now, lets administrators set guardrails and direct agent compute traffic to various isolation backends—process containers, session containers, WSL containers, or hardware-backed MicroVM. “One of the things we realized in the last 3-4 years is that just having a model doesn’t do much for anything,” Nadella said at the event. “You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model.”
Copilot is receiving a major overhaul with a three-tab layout. The Home tab serves as a starting point for interacting with LLMs, the Code tab is designed to let users without coding experience build widgets and applications, and the Autopilot tab is for managing AI agents.
**New Windows Search**
Microsoft is also overhauling Windows Search. The new interface, currently being tested with Windows Insiders, is built on WinUI 3 and promises “substantial improvements in performance and memory usage,” according to Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team. “This new Windows Search experience is built for speed,” Rawat said in a statement reported by The Verge.
The search interface now displays inline results for queries such as an actor’s height, as well as previews of PowerPoint presentations and photos, Rawat explained. It also functions as a launcher that can execute system-level tasks—turning Bluetooth or dark mode on and off, minimizing windows, or opening apps side-by-side. Users of Microsoft’s Phone Link app can even type “text mom, I’m running late” to send a text from their phone. The company plans to bring the new search to the Start menu next year, adapting to different taskbar positions and Windows configurations.
**Hybrid Intelligence**
Microsoft is positioning the entire initiative under a concept it calls “Hybrid Intelligence,” moving away from cloud-only AI to local processing. The Surface Laptop Ultra and Dev Box support local frameworks like llama.cpp and models from the DeepSeek and Nvidia Nemotron families. Users can allocate memory for specific applications as needed.
The announcements represent Microsoft’s first live event in two years. Whether developers and consumers will embrace local AI at these price points remains to be seen, but Microsoft is betting that agentic workflows tied to Windows will drive adoption.
