Milky Mist Soars 30% in India Debut, Gauging Investor Hunger for Branded Dairy Amid Valuation Warnings

Temasek-backed Milky Mist Dairy Food surged nearly 30% on its first trading day, underscoring strong demand for branded value-added dairy in India’s revived IPO market. Yet analysts caution the stock’s rich valuation—around 85 times earnings—may temper further gains.

MUMBAI – Milky Mist Dairy Food Ltd. shares rocketed on their stock market debut Tuesday, closing near the upper circuit after listing at a sharp premium. The rally cemented investors’ enthusiasm for India’s branded dairy sector, even as analysts flagged that the stock’s elevated valuation leaves little room for error.

Shares opened at 165 rupees on both the NSE and BSE, an 18% premium over the issue price of 140 rupees. They then hit the 10% daily limit to trade at 181.5 rupees, valuing the company at 139.69 billion rupees (US$1.46 billion–US$1.5 billion), according to Reuters and the Business Times. Trading volumes were heavy, with more than 9 crore shares worth 1,581 crore rupees changing hands by late morning on the NSE, the Economic Times reported.

The 1,553-crore-rupee initial public offering – comprising a 1,428-crore-rupee fresh issue and a 125-crore-rupee offer for sale – was oversubscribed 56.12 times. Demand from qualified institutional buyers was particularly robust at 155.83 times, while non-institutional investors subscribed 34.91 times and retail investors 8.41 times, according to NDTV Profit and the Economic Times.

The strong listing came as India’s primary market revives. Twenty-six IPOs have been launched or announced in less than two months since July, nearly matching the 28 recorded in the first half of 2026, Reuters reported.

“The IPO market has revived, retail participation is increasing and there is strong liquidity in the market. At the same time, investors are becoming more selective, focusing on valuations and the sustainability of revenue models,” Kranthi Bathini, director of equity strategy at WealthMills Securities, told Reuters. Investors were drawn to Milky Mist’s strong brand and its presence in fast-growing value-added dairy categories such as yogurt and high-protein products, Bathini added, noting the IPO was attractively priced and benefited from growing consumer interest in premium dairy.

The company’s 15.53-billion-rupee IPO was subscribed 2.17 times overall, according to Reuters, which reported a lower overall figure than the Economic Times; the discrepancy appears to reflect different calculation methods. The offering raised 4.65 billion rupees from anchor investors including Singapore’s Temasek, the International Finance Corp and HDFC Mutual Fund, Reuters and the Business Times reported. Temasek-backed Jongsong Investments also invested 482 crore rupees in a pre-IPO round at 139.76 rupees per share for a 5.2% stake, the Economic Times noted.

**Valuation Concerns**

Despite the stellar debut, analysts warned that the stock’s price multiple is stretched. At around 85 times FY26 earnings, valuations remain significantly higher than the dairy sector average of 52.5 times, said Shivani Nyati, head of wealth at Swastika Investmart, as reported by the Economic Times.

“While the premium is supported by its FMCG-like margins and value-added product mix, the strong listing may lead to some profit-booking,” Nyati said. She advised investors to hold the stock with a stop-loss of 150 rupees and consider adding on meaningful dips, but cautioned against chasing the stock at current levels.

Milky Mist reported a 33.6% revenue CAGR, expanding margins and a 32% return on equity, Nyati noted, supporting its premium positioning. The company expects annual revenue growth of about 30%, according to Reuters.

DAM Capital initiated coverage on Milky Mist with a “buy” rating and a price target of 175 rupees before the listing, implying a 25% upside from the issue price, NDTV Profit reported. The brokerage highlighted the company’s 100% value-added dairy portfolio, which spans over 20 categories including paneer, cheese, curd, yogurt, butter, ghee and ice cream.

**Use of Proceeds and Financials**

Milky Mist plans to use the net proceeds from the fresh issue primarily to repay or prepay certain borrowings (496.86 crore rupees), fund capital expenditure for manufacturing facility expansion at its flagship plant in Perundurai, Tamil Nadu (469.24 crore rupees), and deploy visi coolers, ice cream freezers and chocolate coolers to strengthen distribution (155.31 crore rupees), according to multiple sources.

The company reported a sharp improvement in financial performance for FY26. Total income rose 34% year-on-year to 3,145.01 crore rupees, while profit after tax jumped 176% to 127.01 crore rupees, the Economic Times reported.

Incorporated in July 2014, Milky Mist follows an integrated farm-to-consumer model, sourcing milk directly from farmers and processing it through automated facilities supported by an in-house cold-chain network. The company has 1,317 permanent employees.

The listing price exceeded the pre-IPO grey market premium, which had indicated a 14% gain based on a GMP of 19.7 rupees, NDTV Profit reported ahead of the debut.

The broader takeaway is clear: India’s appetite for branded dairy plays remains strong, but the pricing discipline that marked the latest wave of IPOs will continue to be tested as investors weigh growth narratives against the multiples they command.
