Google’s Gemini App Hits 1 Billion Monthly Active Users, Fastest Growth in Company History
CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Gemini has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it Google’s fastest-growing product ever and the 14th to reach the milestone. The app is now roughly on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, though the race behind the user numbers reveals diverging growth trajectories.
Google’s Gemini app has crossed the 1 billion monthly active user (MAU) mark, CEO Sundar Pichai announced Tuesday on X. Pichai called Gemini one of Google’s fastest-growing products and the 14th in the company’s history to hit the billion-user threshold.
The figure refers strictly to the standalone Gemini app and web interface, not to AI features embedded across Google’s broader product suite such as Search AI Mode, Gmail, or Drive. Google reported that Gemini had 750 million MAUs in February, 950 million in its July earnings call, and reached 1 billion last week before the formal announcement, according to Google spokesperson Alex Joseph.
**Race With ChatGPT Tightens**
OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users earlier, though the exact timing has been opaque. OpenAI announced in a blog post on August 6 that “more than 1 billion people are putting ChatGPT to work,” and spokesperson Lindsay McCallum told The Verge that ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly users “some time ago” and hit a billion weekly users in July. External estimates had pegged ChatGPT’s monthly user base at 1 billion as early as this June.
Yet the growth rates tell different stories. OpenAI said ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users in February, meaning it took roughly five months to add 100 million weekly users — a significant slowdown for what was once the fastest-growing software product ever. McCallum declined to provide a monthly user number.
Google, meanwhile, has added 250 million monthly users since February, a 33% increase in six months. On a comparable basis — Google uses monthly, OpenAI uses weekly — the data suggests Gemini is closing the gap in growth velocity, even if ChatGPT retains a larger absolute base.
**Usage Patterns: Voice, Images, and iOS**
Google’s vice president overseeing Gemini, Josh Woodward, provided additional detail on how users engage with the chatbot. According to Google, 63% of Gemini’s active users interact via voice input, and a growing subset are “voice-only” users. Among those using Gemini Live, 20% share their camera feed or screen with the assistant for help.
On the image-generation front, Gemini produces more than 150 million images daily, all watermarked with Google’s SynthID tool. The company noted that businesses frequently use the images for marketing materials, though Ars Technica reported that a large share may be memes and casual content.
Gemini also has more than 100 million monthly active users on iOS, meaning the overwhelming majority of its user base comes from Android, where the app is preinstalled. The iOS figure was confirmed by both TechCrunch and The Verge.
**Educational Use and New Features**
Woodward said that 38% of school-related requests to Gemini include an attachment, signaling heavy use by students. Google is preparing a new set of study tools for release in the coming weeks to support that cohort, as reported by Ars Technica. Gemini chief Josh Woodward also noted that the company continues rolling out new models, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which is designed to improve coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks.
**Broader Implications for the AI Race**
The milestone comes ahead of Google’s Made by Google hardware event, where more Gemini-powered features are expected to launch on Pixel devices. It also follows a period of intense competition in the AI chatbot space. Anthropic’s Claude Code became a phenomenon earlier this year, and models from Chinese developers have added pressure. While ChatGPT remains the more recognized brand, its once-dominant lead has narrowed significantly.
“The race to a billion users is over — now these companies have to race to find things for those users to do, and ways to make money in the process,” The Verge noted in its coverage.
Google’s ability to funnel users through its existing Android and search infrastructure appears to be a decisive factor in Gemini’s growth. The company’s AI Mode in Search alone has over 1 billion monthly active users globally, though those are not counted in the Gemini app metric. That installed base gives Google a distribution advantage that pure-play chatbot competitors lack.
