Crypto Edges Higher on Iran Hopes, But Fear Gauge Stays at 27

Bitcoin climbed toward $65,000 and altcoins rallied Tuesday as diplomatic signals on Iran de-escalated, but the market's fear index remained frozen at "Fear" level, highlighting a persistent disconnect between price action and sentiment.

Cryptocurrencies posted broad gains on Tuesday, with Bitcoin nearing $65,000 and altcoins surging into the green as investors weighed the prospects of a U.S.-Iran peace agreement. The move came after President Donald Trump said the U.S. would hold off on strikes against Iran provided a deal comes together "rapidly," and Iran indicated that negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz were in their final stages.

Yet the market's fear gauge failed to follow the tape higher. According to data from the Medium blog "Chain of Thoughts," the Crypto Fear & Greed Index sat unchanged at 27 — still solidly in "Fear" territory — exactly where it closed the previous session. The index remained frozen even as every major coin printed gains and the oil premium that had hung over the complex through July deflated.

Brent crude oil sat flat at $90.12, according to the same source, instead of gapping on a supply-shock scenario. The flat oil price confirmed that the threat of strikes on Iranian energy sites had receded, at least for now. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had publicly urged Trump to prioritize dialogue, the Medium report noted.

**Bitcoin and Altcoins**

Bitcoin traded at $63,516, up 1.19% on Tuesday, according to the Medium report. The Investing.com news service added that Bitcoin was "nears $65k amid Hormuz hopes, improving ETF flows." The coin had failed to reclaim the $65,000 level on previous attempts, and traders were watching for a close above that resistance on weekday volume to signal a shift from a capped range to a recovering trend.

Ethereum led the rotation among major coins, rising 2.38% to $1,888.14. The move pushed it comfortably above the $1,800 weekly-close shelf that had been a defense line in prior sessions. According to the Medium analysis, the Ethereum gain "did the thing the rotation trade needed" by outrunning Bitcoin on the day.

Cardano posted the sharpest gain among the top coins, jumping 8.59% to $0.1891. The Medium report cautioned that the outsized move likely reflected low liquidity rather than a catalyst specific to the Cardano chain. "Thin books cut both ways: the coin that fell the least on Friday's fear and drifted up on the empty weekend is the same coin that prints the biggest green candle the moment risk appetite returns," the blog said.

Solana rose 2.89% to $73.87, Binance Coin added 2.34% to $589.10, and XRP gained 2.30% to $1.08. The tail moved as a bloc, with all three closing in the same 2–3% band, signaling a shared risk-on impulse rather than coin-specific news.

Benzinga reported that leading cryptocurrencies edged higher on Tuesday, August 4, as investors weighed the prospects of a U.S.-Iran peace agreement after weeks of fighting.

**Macro Context and Lingering Fear**

The medium-term macro backdrop remained supportive, with the U.S. dollar index holding under 100 at 99.80 and gold near record levels, according to the Medium blog. Both moves serve as a quiet debasement signal that bolsters the case for scarce assets like Bitcoin over multiple years, the analysis argued.

Still, the freeze at 27 on the Fear & Greed Index underscores the market's reluctance to embrace the rally as a turning point. The blog described the discrepancy as "the contradiction worth sitting with." Bitcoin's rally above $63,000 was the first session in a week where price was pushing up rather than defending down, but the move printed on the thinnest liquidity of the week — a Sunday bid that remains unconfirmed until weekday volume validates it.

Traders were watching for a hold above $63,000 into Monday's cash close to sustain the base-building narrative, and a break above $65,000 on weekday size would flip the range from capped to recovering. A loss of $62,000 would reset everything to the downside, the analysis warned.
