Whirlpool stock jumps 13.6% on turnaround progress; weak demand, higher interest costs persist

Whirlpool shares have gained 13.6% over the past month as pricing actions and cost cuts begin to lift margins, but the appliance maker remains down 40.4% year to date and faces continued pressure from declining industry demand, tariffs and elevated financing expenses.

Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR) reported second-quarter 2026 results that showed early signs of a turnaround, with sequential margin improvement driven by pricing actions and cost reductions, though sales and profitability remained below prior-year levels. The stock has risen 13.6% over the past month, according to Zacks Investment Research, but remains down 40.4% year to date.

The company reported second-quarter net sales of $3.52 billion, down 6.8% year over year, while ongoing EBIT margin fell to 1.8% from 5.3% a year ago. The decline reflects continued weakness in appliance demand, with U.S. industry demand falling 3.4% year over year during the quarter.

**Pricing actions begin to take hold**

Whirlpool's pricing initiatives are starting to support profitability, particularly in North America. In the second quarter, MDA North America net sales increased 8% sequentially, and EBIT margin improved 240 basis points from the first quarter, driven mainly by promotional price increases. The company executed a promotional price increase of more than 10% compared with first-quarter prices and implemented an additional list price increase of approximately 4% effective in July, according to the company's reports.

Management expects these actions, along with builder pricing, to provide further benefits in the second half of 2026. Whirlpool maintained its 2026 operational outlook, including expectations for approximately $15 billion in net sales and an ongoing EBIT margin of about 4%.

**Cost reduction program targets $150 million in 2026**

Whirlpool is advancing structural cost-reduction initiatives aimed at creating a lower-cost operating structure. The company remains on track to deliver more than $150 million in structural cost takeout in 2026 through automation, strategic sourcing and fixed-cost actions.

Footprint optimization efforts are also underway. Zacks reported that the Amana facility modernization is expected to generate approximately $70 million in annualized EBIT improvement, the Perrysburg facility could add about $30 million, and distribution network changes are expected to generate another $60 million in annualized EBIT benefits. Most of these footprint-related benefits are expected to build more meaningfully in 2027 and 2028.

**Balance sheet actions improve liquidity, increase interest costs**

Whirlpool has strengthened liquidity through financing actions, including the completion of a $2 billion asset-based lending facility and issuance of $2 billion in secured bonds, extending debt maturities and improving financial flexibility. The company also completed a $1.1 billion equity offering and sold its minority interest in Beko Europe.

Management expects year-end 2026 net debt to fall below $5 billion and is targeting more than $300 million in free cash flow for the year. However, the refinancing activity raised Whirlpool's expected 2026 interest expense outlook to approximately $350 million from $300 million, contributing to lower earnings guidance despite maintaining the operational outlook.

**Demand and competitive pressures remain**

Despite progress on pricing and costs, Whirlpool continues to operate in a difficult demand environment. MDA North America sales declined 1.5% year over year as lower industry demand weighed on volumes, partially offset by favorable price/mix. Cost pressures also remain a concern, with margin improvement from pricing and mix partly offset by tariffs and raw-material inflation, including higher steel and base-metal costs.

Competition is intense across the appliance industry, with companies including SharkNinja, Inc. (NYSE: SN), Newell Brands Inc. (NYSE: NWL) and Helen of Troy Limited (NASDAQ: HELE) competing across major appliance categories.

**Valuation and ratings signal mixed profile**

Zacks rates Whirlpool a #3 (Hold) and assigns a Neutral recommendation, with a 6-12 month price target of $46. The stock trades at 20X forward 12-month earnings, compared with 16.41X for the Zacks sub-industry and 20.79X for the S&P 500, according to Zacks. The stock also trades at a low price-to-sales multiple of 0.19, suggesting limited value assigned to current revenue levels.

The stock has a Zacks Value Score of B, with Growth Score of F, Momentum Score of F and VGM Score of D, highlighting valuation support but weaker growth and momentum characteristics.

**Recovery depends on execution and demand improvement**

Whirlpool's turnaround remains dependent on continued execution of pricing initiatives, cost reductions and balance sheet management. The company's pricing actions and cost cuts provide a potential path to margin recovery, but sustained gains may require improvement in appliance demand and housing activity, along with successful navigation of tariff and raw-material cost pressures. Until demand conditions improve, investors face a mixed picture of improving operational execution against persistent headwinds.
